Oda Nobunaga built Gifu Castle during the Warring States period, dreaming of unifying the country.
He loved the "cormorant fishing" of the Nagara River, the wood culture that lives on in Gifu, and the inherited Hida Shunkei lacquerware and woodworking techniques of Hida artisans.
Why not take a break from your busy daily life and take an adult trip to quietly experience Gifu's traditional culture while thinking back to the time of Nobunaga?

"Cormorant fishing"

Nagaragawa Cormorant Fishing, which takes place on the Nagaragawa River in Gifu Prefecture, is a traditional fishing method with a history of over 1,300 years.
Oda Nobunaga was also a great lover of cormorant fishing, and there are records that he protected the cormorant fishermen when he was staying at Gifu Castle.

Nowadays, it is available for tourists to enjoy from the "Ukai Observation Boat" at night from May to October.
The bonfires and the cormorants reflected on the water are a truly fantastic sight.is.
Cormorant fishermen serve the Imperial Household Agency and their skills are truly those of a master craftsman.

Event period: May 11th to November 15th, 2025

"Hida Shunkei Lacquerware"

The "Tourushi" technique makes the most of the natural wood grainThis brings out the natural look and luster of the wood.
It has a history of about 400 years, and is said to have originated from a tray made by Takahashi Kizaemon, a carpenter from Takayama City in the 17th century. This tray was then finished by Narita San'emon, a lacquer artist.
It is a traditional technique in which skilled "kijishi" (woodworker) and "nushi" (lacquerer) work together to carry out the entire process by hand, from selecting the materials to applying the paint.
Its functionality is also emphasized as an everyday item (tiered boxes, trays, bowls, etc.), and its appeal is that the more you use it, the more its character and luster improves.
